Areas of Inheritance Tax
What is Inheritance Tax?
Inheritance Tax (IHT) is a tax levied on the estate of a deceased person. It is calculated on the total value of the person’s assets. The tax must be paid to HMRC before assets are transferred to beneficiaries.
How Does It Work?
The tax rate is charged at 40%, applied to assests exceeding the available allowances. In addition, money given away during certain periods before death can also be added to the value of the estate.
Married couples and civil partners can transfer assets to each other without triggering IHT. This means IHT is often only charged when the last survivor in a couple passes away. Current thresholds can allow for up to £1 million of assets to pass to beneficiaries without IHT, given the right conditions.
Why You Need a Financial Planner to Advise You
IHT is a complex tax which includes complex allowances that require certain conditions to be met. Navigating the complexities of IHT requires expert knowledge. A financial planner can provide invaluable guidance, ensuring you make the most of available allowances and reliefs, and avoid costly mistakes.

Mr and Mrs M had an estate valued at £2,000,000 and an inheritance tax liability of £400,000.
