A trust/settlement is a means of holding money for an individual(s) without giving them immediate access to the monies.
Often a trust will be created to allow a gift to be made at a time when the beneficiary is too young or immature to hold the monies. They are used to protect the beneficiary from themselves or from third parties and they can effectively be used to dispose of property by the donor for tax saving purposes without giving an immediate right to a beneficiary.
