In this edition of Meet the Legal Expert, we speak with Simone De-Maria, a Chartered Legal Executive in the Family team at WBW Solicitors, based at our Axminster office.
Simone advises clients on a wide range of family law matters, including divorce, financial settlements, cohabitation disputes and private Children Act proceedings. Known for her empathetic and client-focused approach, Simone supports individuals and families through what can often be emotionally challenging times.

Q&A with Simone De-Maria
Can you tell us a bit about your role at WBW and what areas of family law you specialise in?
I am a Chartered Legal Executive in the Family Team and a Member of Resolution. My focus is upon divorce and financial matters, offering advice on separation and co-habitee disputes. As well as child contact and residence disputes and private Children Act matters.
What inspired you to pursue a career in family law?
I worked in various legal departments whilst completing my qualifying training for CILEX, but as soon as I started working in family law, something clicked I found family law both fascinating and the work involved although, challenging also rewarding.
What do you enjoy most about working in Axminster and supporting clients in the local community?
To be honest, as I have always worked and lived in Somerset, I did not know Axminster at all until I started working for WBW this summer. However, I love working in Axminster because it has a strong sense of community, so you get to know people on a personal level not just as clients. Being able to support local people and see the positive impact of what we do is rewarding.
How do you approach cases that can be particularly sensitive or emotionally challenging?
When I am faced with a sensitive or emotionally challenging matter, I always approach it with empathy, patience and respect. I make sure I show genuine compassion and understanding of the client’s situation and try to support them as much as possible, whilst still maintaining a professional stance.
What do you find most rewarding about helping clients through family matters?
The most rewarding aspect for me is witnessing a completely demoralised client who is uncertain about their future and what is going to happen in their case, gradually change their outlook and by the end of their case be more confident, optimistic and positive and ready to face whatever their future holds.
What do you think sets WBW Solicitors apart from other firms?
What I think sets WBW apart from other firms is their connection with the local community. WBW do not just provide a legal service but they also support clients and local businesses in any way they can. Whilst WBW is a large west country law Firm, it was clear from day one how much they value their employees and care about their welfare, with a sense of community across the workforce. All the staff I have encountered since I started working here, both in the Axminster Office and other Offices have been very helpful, friendly and welcoming, making it an enjoyable place to work.
How is technology shaping the way you work with clients and manage cases?
When I first started working in family law all correspondence was sent by post and we kept physical paper files. Now all correspondence is electronically produced allowing for a quick response, which is particularly helpful when you have a Court deadline to meet. Also, now the Court has an online portal system it is much easier to upload applications and Orders, rather than having to post everything to the Court and then wait an eternity for a response. With the advent of Case Management Systems it is now much easier to run clients’ cases as work on every client is electronically stored so can be easily accessed for another Fee Earner to pick up at any time if you are not available. This enables client’s cases to be managed much more efficiently. Furthermore, we now have electronic Trial Bundles which can be attached to an email and sent to the parties and be uploaded on the Court portal allowing easy access for Court Hearings, instead of printing paper Trial Bundles as we did previously.
What advice would you give to someone going through a family or relationship breakdown?
Even though your relationship has broken down, communication is key. Despite your differences, if at all possible, try to resolve as many issues between you as you can. Never make it personal, or try to point score against the other party and never involve children in adult disputes, or expect them to choose sides.
How do you like to spend your time outside of work?
I like to travel and explore new places, both in the UK and abroad, particularly if they are of historical interest. I also love taking part in a pub quiz.
