We are pleased to introduce Kate Maslen, a Partner in our Dispute Resolution team and Branch Manager of the Exmouth office at WBW Solicitors.
Kate joined the firm in 2021 and brings with her a wealth of experience in resolving a wide range of legal disputes for both businesses and individuals. Known for her practical, strategic approach and strong client relationships, Kate supports clients locally in Exmouth and across the South West, as well as acting for clients further afield.
In this Q&A, Kate shares more about her career journey, her areas of specialism, her role as Branch Manager, and how she supports the local business and wider community.
Q&A with Kate Maslen
What first inspired you to pursue a career in law, and what led you towards dispute resolution?
I’ve always enjoyed problem-solving even at aged 11, when I wrote my first “letter of claim” after finding a KitKat with no biscuit in it. I was sent vouchers which I shared with my school friends.
Studying A-level Law later on confirmed my interest in law, and I was drawn to dispute resolution because it focuses on practical solutions and supporting people through challenges.
You have worked in several regions before returning to Devon. How has your career journey shaped the way you advise clients today?
Training in the Northwest (including Manchester, Preston) was a huge learning experience for me. Coming from Devon, it was initially quite daunting, but it gave me exposure to multi-million-pound disputes at a very early stage in my career.
Working in fast-paced city environments was a real eye-opener and helped me develop a commercial, pragmatic approach. Bringing that experience back to Devon means that I am able to combine big-city experience with a personable style when advising clients.
Can you tell us about your role as Branch Manager of the Exmouth office and what that involves day to day?
As Branch Manager of the Exmouth office, my role is to ensure the office runs smoothly on a day-to-day basis. That involves overseeing operations, supporting and leading the team, and making sure everyone has what they need to do their job effectively.
I am also involved in developing and delivering the office’s business and marketing strategies, as well as building strong links with the local community.
You advise on a broad range of disputes, from contractual matters to TOLATA claims. Which types of cases do you most enjoy working on, and why?
While I enjoy the breadth of disputes I advise on, property and commercial matters are those I find most rewarding. I enjoy the challenge they bring and the fact that each case is different, requiring strategic and practical problem-solving
You also specialise in collective enfranchisement alongside the property team. What should clients know about this area of law?
Collective enfranchisement is a complex and technical area of property law, governed by a detailed statutory procedure. Getting the process wrong can be expensive, so it’s important for clients to seek specialist advice from the outset to ensure matters progress smoothly and efficiently.
Disputes can be stressful for clients. How do you help clients feel supported and confident throughout the process?
Client feedback often describes me as personable and approachable, which is something I value highly. Disputes can be overwhelming for clients, so my priority is to ensure they feel supported and understood. I take a human, practical approach to explaining the legal process, communicating clearly and openly so clients feel confident and reassured throughout their case.
In 2023, you won the Legal Eagle award at the Nottys Business Awards. What did that recognition mean to you?
The award meant a great deal to me, especially being up against such strong competition. As a first-generation university graduate, being recognised by the local business community was particularly rewarding.

As someone working closely with businesses and individuals locally, how do you see WBW supporting the Exmouth community?
WBW is proud to play an active role in supporting the Exmouth community. This includes involvement with initiatives such as Exmouth in Bloom, supporting local sports clubs including Exmouth and Budleigh cricket clubs, and assisting Budleigh football club. We also value giving back through charitable partnerships, including our work with SPACE as Charity of the Year. Supporting local organisations and initiatives is an important part of how WBW stays connected to the communities we serve.
Outside of work, you enjoy the gym and kickboxing . How do you balance a busy legal career with family life and personal interests?
I think balance is really important. Making time for family, going to the gym helps me switch off, recharge which makes a big difference in a busy role.
