Today we talk to Matthew Cooper, Partner in our Paignton office.
What is your role at WBW and what area of law do you specialise in?
I am a Partner at WBW and specialise in Private Client work including Wills, Probate, Estate administration and Power of Attorney.
What did you want to be when you were young?
A tennis player.
What was your first full time job?
Working in a sports shop during school and university summer holidays and then recruitment once I graduated.
What made you decide to practice private client law?
I wanted face to face client contact and to work in an area whereby I could help people and families who are often experiencing difficult times.
What do you like the most about the town you work in?
I like the fact that you can drive to the coast in 20 minutes and also Dartmoor. The best of both worlds!
What has been the best moment in your career?
I don’t have one particular moment, but I enjoy receiving feedback from clients that have appreciated, and benefited, from the advice and support we have given.
You receive a lot of glowing comments from clients, what do you do differently to keep your clients happy?
I try as best as possible to keep client’s updated and make use of technology. I also try and listen carefully to their concerns and reassure them through difficult situations.
What are your top tips for client’s?
Always ensure you have a Will and it is up to date. Also, do not leave updating your Will until the last minute.
What has been the most challenging part of your career?
I think the huge increase in volume of work since the start of the pandemic has been challenging.
What’s the biggest misconception people have about your profession?
That the job is what people see in TV shows and films, all glitz and glamour!
What’s your favourite holiday destination?
Maldives by far which we were lucky enough to visit for our recent honeymoon! I would also quite happily live in Canada in a log cabin in the wilderness!
Who is your hero?
Roger Federer and Andy Murray – simply amazing sporting icons. My father also hugely inspired me to do what I do today.
If you could meet anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?
Maria Sharapova – or Roger Federer and Andy Murray!
An interesting fact about me is…
I once trekked along the Great Wall of China and slept on a farm at its base!
