Today we talk to Anthony Fripp, office Partner at WBW’s Torquay office, who specialises in all aspects Commercial and Residential Conveyancing.
What is your role at WBW?
I am an Equity Partner and Office Partner at WBW’s Torquay office.
What did you want to be when you were young?
Many things! As I grew up, I think it might have been a Dinosaur, a Lorry Driver, an Astronaut and a Rockstar..!
What was your first full time job?
Boringly, my first proper permanent full time job was a Trainee Solicitor in Milton Keynes. I had worked in holidays whilst at Uni, and have done pub work, worked on a Farm and in a blow-mould plastic factory, so I do have some idea of a honest day’s work!
What made you decide to practice law?
I enjoyed land law at University and wanted to do commercial property work early on, because I thought it might be glamorous! The passage of time has proved that not much of what I do is particularly glamorous, but I do still really enjoy the work!
What do you like the most about the town you work in?
I love being near the sea, and whilst Torquay has struggled a bit in the past with a lack of investment, there are definite improvements taking place and its really nice to play a small part in that. I have great colleagues and we have a nice office and a really nice supportive, fun atmosphere here. I look forward to being able to go on more nights out!
What has been the best moment in your career?
There’s not one huge moment to point to, as there are lots of small moments. Whilst personally it might be becoming an equity partner, there so many occasions where colleagues have done well or developed and grown, and where clients have been grateful (though not always!).
What has been the most challenging part of your career?
I’d probably say over the past couple of years. The various lockdowns, restrictions, and the effect on us all, including clients – who have been at times quite challenging, as they were struggling too.
What’s the biggest misconception people have about your profession?
That it is much better paid that it actually is!
What’s your favourite holiday destination?
So far, it’s probably New Zealand, although it was a long time ago now that I went!
Who is your hero?
I think it would be my father. He sadly died suddenly a few years ago, and at least a decade too soon, but he was dedicated and intelligent and funny and he liked rugby and beer! I’m toying with carrying on his tradition wearing shorts from May to October regardless of the weather – but perhaps best to keep this to retirement..
If you could meet anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?
That’s another question where I could have 20 answers, but if you’re insisting, I think it would be fascinating to meet Alan Turing.
An interesting fact about me is…
I foster trainee guide dogs (evenings and weekends) whilst they are being trained in Exeter. We are currently looking after ‘Waffle’ who is a golden Labrador/German Shepherd mix. It’s a really rewarding and fun thing to do.
