The government has announced new support for employers for the New National Restrictions period that starts on Thursday 5 November 2020. The Prime Minister announced that:
- The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, also known as furlough (the CJRS) will be extended; and
- The Job Support Scheme (scheduled to come in on Sunday 1st November 2020) will be postponed until the extended CJRS ends.
- The extended CJRS will operate as the previous scheme did, but to be eligible to claim under this extension, employees must have been on the employer’s PAYE payroll by 23:59 30th October 2020. This means a Real Time Information (RTI) submission notifying payment for that employee to HMRC must have been made on or before 30th October 2020.
If you need to use the extended CJRS, then you will need to carefully review the published information before claiming.
You will also need a written agreement with each employee before you furlough them under extended CJRS. The CJRS requires an employee’s furlough to be confirmed in writing. Any variation of employment terms to enable furlough should also be agreed in writing.
