Motorcyclists account for around 19% of road user deaths, but only make up 1% of total road traffic. These figures may not seem to make sense at first but when reading reports such as a recently released one from Think! it is clear to see the dangers that can be faced by people on their motorcycle. Think! reported that a motorcyclist is 38 times more likely to be involved in a road traffic accident with a four wheeled vehicle; this would certainly make many individuals consider their chances before getting on to a bike.
There were a staggering 1796 motorcycle accidents reported in the South West alone last year which maybe low compared to 5157 reported by Motorcycle News in London but is still significantly high when you consider what a small percentage they make up of road traffic. Motorcycle Mcams Accident Management Services stated that 70% of these accidents involved a 4 wheeled vehicle. The tragic fact is that the majority of these accidents and deaths were not the fault of the motorcyclist. An independent inquiry proved that 80% of accidents were the cause of other parties not the motorcyclist involved. With so many accidents occurring and a high number seeming to be caused by other parties, why should you have to suffer the pain and inconvenience of an accident or an injury.
None of us would ever wish to become one of these statistics but with Spring approaching and motorcyclists finally being able to get back on their bikes, it’s time to be extra vigilant. Accidents do happen and if the unthinkable were to happen to you it could have a devastating effect on you, your family and friends. An unexpected injury through no fault of your own which affects your ability to carry out your day to day activities could leave you distressed and struggling to make ends meet.
