Meet the Mortgage Advisor – Samantha Allnutt

If you have ever bought a property then you will no doubt know how invaluable it is to receive sound mortgage advice from a professional. Today, we speak to Samantha Allnutt, a Mortgage Advisor at WBW Mortgages, to find out more about her and the work that she does.

What is your background?

My background is banking and I was a bank manager for over 15 years with Britannia Building Society and Co-operative Bank. I completed my mortgage training within the bank and was a mortgage supervisor alongside my management role. I then left banking in 2018 and went full-time as a self-employed mortgage advisor. The main reason for this was to have a better work/life balance and to challenge myself to see if I could be my own boss!

What made you decide to go into mortgages?

I joined Britannia BS part-time working as a cashier to fit around my young family. I was enthusiastic to learn more, and the company offered to train me to become an insurance advisor and then work towards becoming a mortgage advisor. I loved customer services and helping clients achieve their dreams or fixing their problems. I was offered a mortgage role at our Newton Abbot office, where I had a successful 12 months. Route for progression was management back then and I was offered a managers role in Exeter and stayed with the company for another 15 years!

Why do you enjoy your particular field?

My job is like a puzzle! Every client has different needs and wants, and my job is to find out what they are by getting to know the client and for the client to trust me to look after them. Then it is my job to find the most suitable solution that ticks all the boxes for my client but also the lender that we are using to raise the funds. The last couple of years have been challenging due to criteria changing so much, especially for the self-employed. I always get a warm glow when a client comes to me thinking a lender will not help them, to turn around and say ‘ Yes! I have found someone for you!’

What were the most interesting developments in your industry during 2021?

Covid-19 was an interesting development for the lending industry. At the start, criteria were changing weekly, and you had to move quickly for clients. The property market boomed, and workload increased to incredible levels. It was so important to keep up to date with everything. For the self-employed it became increasingly more difficult to get a mortgage and more were seeking professional mortgage advisors for help and support. Thankfully, this has started to calm down and we are seeing lenders becoming more relaxed for our clients.

We also saw an uplift of families helping first time buyers get on the property ladder by gifting deposits. This seems to be the norm now.

Property prices in the Southwest have continued to rise and we have seen a big increase in valuations across all types of properties.

What’s the biggest misconception people have about your profession?

When you say you are a Mortgage Advisor, people tend to switch off and think it is boring because it is finance! It’s not! I have so much fun meeting new people every day, learning about their lives and what interests them. I laugh and smile every day because of the people I interact with. It’s a very satisfying job but can be emotional at times because I really care about my clients.

Surprise us…

In my spare time I sail. I am in front of a computer every day and once a week in season I head over to Brixham to join the fleet for a race and a nice supper afterwards. It’s an amazing feeling sailing in the bay and watching the sunset over the horizon.
