40 years for Derek Reed

Newton Abbot Solicitor, Derek Reed, completes 40 years with WBW Solicitors this month. Derek, who is now a Consultant with the firm said, "I can still remember my first day at what was then Woollcombe Watts & Scrivener in Lloyds Bank Chambers. I was given a table and a chair in a dusty file store and was paid the princely sum of £5 per week as an Articled Clerk! I received very good training in Articles from the Partners in the firm at that time, Murray Watts, David Jervois and John Scriverner and I became a fully qualified Solicitor in June 1971.

The firm gradually expanded and opened offices in Totnes, Chagford, Bovey Tracey, Kingsteignton and Torquay. After working in Lloyds Bank Chambers up until 1988, the firm took a big step forward and moved to its present Newton Abbot office in Church House, having spent considerable sums converting the old United Reformed Church into modern offices.

Derek said, "I've thoroughly enjoyed my career in law and I have been lucky enough to meet a very wide range of clients and deal with challenging and varied work throughout my career. In the early days, I appeared on a very regular basis in the local Magistrates and dealt with many interesting criminal trials including a significant number of murder cases.

After that, I became a member of a Law Society Specialist Panel dealing with medical claims and underwent specialist training to enable me to better understand the issues involved.

I continue my link with the firm as a Consultant looking after long established clients and assisting where I can.

I am delighted to say that the firm continues to expand and progress and now has large offices in Torquay and Exeter as well as Newton Abbot and the Bovey Tracey office still continues to serve that community.

WBW Solicitors has been established for over 170 years with offices in Exeter, Newton Abbot, Torquay and Bovey Tracey. They employ over 100 staff and have 22 partners. The firm has continued to grow and in June 2008 merged with fellow law firm Silverthorne Colthorpe Solicitors. In May 2009, WBW Solicitors had a successful conversion to become a Limited Liability Partnership.
