A mother left unable to recognise her children due to a stroke after surgery has received a £4.85million payout from Derriford Hospital.

The woman had returned to the hospital with complications following surgery in May 2006, when she was aged 32.

She had a stroke which resulted in brain damage, according to her solicitors. The lawyers blamed the problems on a lack of care.

The woman from south Devon, who asked to remain anonymous, has been awarded the massive sum after a six-year legal battle.

Her husband said: "No amount of money will compensate for what has happened, but at least this will allow us to provide the proper care she needs. The Government needs to revise how they deal with clinical negligence clients – their claims should be sorted within 12 months."

Her solicitors said that because of a lack of care at Derriford, the woman suffered serious brain injury, resulting in problems seeing and hearing properly, as well as other mental issues.

She cannot recognise familiar faces, including her own children's.

WBW solicitors maintained that had the woman been monitored properly in Derriford Hospital when she returned after shunt surgery complaining of headaches and vomiting then an increase in pressure on her brain would have been spotted and dealt with properly, and her severe disabilities prevented.

A shunt is a device which drains excess fluid in the brain.

Jane Couch, a Partner at WBW Solicitors said: "I was delighted with the award negotiated for my client which will ensure she receives the care and treatment required.

"My client and her family have shown immense courage in pursuing this case, coping not only with the disability but the financial hardship which arose as a consequence of that disability."

Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust confirmed they had reached a settlement in the case.

A spokeswoman added: "Out of respect for the patient's wish to remain unidentified we cannot provide any further comment, other than to convey our best wishes to her for the future and to hope that the conclusion to what was an extremely complex litigation will go some way to alleviating her problems."
