Identity Theft Scam Targets US Citizens AbroadPrintPdfClose »

An extremely convincing Internet scam has recently come to our attention which is targeted at US citizens resident abroad.

The scam consists of an invitation to the recipient to apply for ‘tax exempt’ status from US taxes because of foreign residence. It is accompanied by a very convincing-looking form (“form W-4100B2 “) with a request that it is completed and faxed back with a copy of an ID document. The information sought is sufficient for identity theft to occur.

Unfortunately, there is no such form and no such exemption. US Citizens are taxable on their world income and there is a de minimus exemption for foreign earnings.
