Attorney Guilty of Theft From Elderly FriendPrintPdfClose »

A woman who abused a relationship of trust was found guilty of the theft of nearly £30,000 recently.

The 63 year-old woman befriended another woman, aged in her late 70s and was given a power of attorney over her finances.

Instead of using the power of attorney for the benefit of the older woman, she paid for a holiday, paid off her credit card debts and paid for a postgraduate course for her son.

The lesson to be learned is to make sure that under no circumstances should anyone give a power of attorney over their finances to anyone whom they do not know to be completely trustworthy.
