Duty of CandourWe support the Governments new guidelines for medical staff to take accountability for when things go wrong and be more open and honest with patients.  The new ‘Duty of Candour’ guidelines will mean that when things go wrong for patients and there is a case for clinical negligence the process will be much quicker and easier for patients to get any compensation they deserve following the mistake.  By admitting liability at an early stage and saying sorry for mistakes, which unfortunately do happen, the case time will be reduced meaning legal costs will come down and resolution for patients will be much quicker.

If this new initiative is actioned properly all parties will see significant benefit; patients will be in a better position to resolve medical problems and take action if required; legal teams will be able to resolve disputes faster and more efficiently; the medical profession can focus on prevention, improvement and resolution and the NHS will be able to reduce the bill for legal fees.
